Check the HTTP status and indexability

Start with a representative URL list: homepage, category pages, articles, product or service pages, and important landing pages. Confirm each intended page returns a successful status and is not blocked by authentication, accidental noindex directives, or robots rules. A 200 response alone does not prove that a page is useful or eligible for indexing.

Inspect robots, canonicals and sitemaps

Keep the XML sitemap limited to canonical, indexable URLs that return a successful response. Check that canonical tags point to the preferred URL and that robots.txt is not being used to hide pages that should be crawled. A robots block can prevent search engines from seeing a page-level noindex directive.

Fix internal discovery paths

Important pages should be reachable through descriptive links from relevant pages, not only through a sitemap. Repair broken internal links, redirect chains and orphaned pages. Prioritise issues that affect valuable content before minor technical warnings.

Recheck after deployment

Test a sample of affected URLs after changes, then review crawl and indexing reports over time. Keep a dated change log so ranking or crawl changes can be compared with specific releases.
